CITY OF RICHLAND: Richland Seeks Citizen Input for Street Lighting Standards

City of Richland issued the following announcement on May 31.

The City of Richland is finalizing its Street Lighting Retrofit Standards and needs your help!

This study will develop a new comprehensive street lighting policy for the City of Richland that addresses recommended light levels and light character for all street classifications. As part of this study, the City is reviewing its current Light-Emitting Diode (LED) standards and developing a plan to implement LED lighting throughout the City. This upgrade will ultimately help decrease energy consumption and reduce maintenance costs in comparison to existing streetlight infrastructure.

Here is how you can help!

  • Print out the map and the survey questions located on the website and have it accessible when evaluating the lighting.
  • After dusk, drive to the Clearwater Creek neighborhood, located off Steptoe Boulevard and Center Parkway, near Amon Creek Elementary School.
  • Participants are asked to drive through the demonstration area after dark and provide feedback regarding the light temperature and uniformity of light application.
  • The non-continuous lighting (orange) has fewer lights turned on to reflect a reduced lighting standard. If acceptable, this standard will mean fewer street lights in a neighborhood.
  • Write notes as you observe (on printed material) and take the online survey as soon as possible. You can also snap a photo of your handwritten survey and email it to jwest@ci.richland.wa.us.
The street light map and online survey are available at www.ci.richland.wa.us/streetlightretrofit. Only one survey per person.

The survey ends on June 10, 2020.
