City of Kennewick issued the following announcement on June 16.
Staff from the Fire Marshal’s Office of the Kennewick Fire Department will be providing information this week to homeowners in the Zintel Canyon area.
Door hanger packets containing a letter from the Fire Chief, information on creating Defensible Space around the home, and a CODE RED evacuation notification application for smart phones.
Although the weather has been wet and moderate so far this year, indications are for a very active fire season. This is the perfect time to address vegetation around your home and remove combustibles now while the weather is good, as it will reduce your risk later.
Our area contains light flashy fuel, and fires will occur again. The production of embers from these fires are a significant cause of homes catching fire. Creating a Defensible Space around your home can reduce or eliminate the possibility of your home catching fire from the fast moving fires that occur in our area. Removing vegetation and combustibles around your home will reduce your risk of the embers starting fires around your home.
Simple ways to reduce your risk include:
* Cleaning seasonal debris out of gutters
* Clearing away leaves and needles in the 0-5 foot “immediate zone” around the house
* Moving any flammable material (mulch, flammable plants, firewood piles, etc.) away from exterior walls
* Removing anything flammable stored underneath decks or porches
