Charter College issued the following announcement.
You’re ready to embark on a whole new career, but you’ll need to go back to school before you can land that dream job. You’re interested in dental assisting, but you’ve heard that the training can be a challenge. Is dental assisting school hard to complete? Not with some hard work and dedication.
Is Dental Assisting Right for Me?
Dental assisting school will be harder for you to complete if you find out halfway through that it’s not the right career path for you. So, before you start, you’ll want to know what it takes to be a Dental Assistant.
As a Dental Assistant, you’ll work on the clinical and administrative sides of a dental practice. You’ll assist the dentist during oral exams and minor surgical procedures and you’ll also greet patients, show them to the exam room, and prepare them for what’s to come. This means you’ll need to be a people person and also good with paperwork. You’ll need to be friendly but professional, and able communicate through email and over the phone. Here are a few other traits that will set you up for success:
- Organization—On the administrative side, you’ll need to keep track of the daily schedules and remind patients of when their next appointment is. You’ll also need to ensure that the office is stocked with supplies and that the exam rooms and equipment are kept clean and sterilized.
- Dexterity—It will take keen eye-hand coordination to use dental tools, perform x-rays, and take dental impressions.
- Eye for Detail—You’ll have to keep track of a lot of tools and be able to anticipate when the dentist will need each one. You’ll also have to keep a close eye on the patients to make sure they’re doing well during the exam or procedure.
One of the benefits of dental assisting school is that only part of your time is spent in the classroom. You’ll spend the rest of the time in a lab, where you’ll receive hands-on training in specific dental techniques. Here’s some of what you can expect to learn:
- Proper infection control and sterilization techniques
- Healthcare and safety regulations
- Dental radiology
- Front office procedures
Many dental assisting schools offer programs that can take 12 to 18 months to complete. But at Charter College, we offer a Certificate in Dental Assisting that can take as few as 10 months to complete. And when you graduate, you’ll be prepared for an entry-level job in the field. We offer this program in Canyon Country, Lancaster, Oxnard, Fife, Pasco, and Vancouver.
