RICHLAND, Wash. – Washington State University Tri-Cities is pleased to present the Herbert M. Parker Foundation Lecture Series featuring Michael Stabin April 7 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. April 7 online at YouTube.com/wsutricities.

Michael Stabin is a certified health physicist working for NV5, a provider of compliance, technology and engineering consulting solutions for public and private sector clients supporting infrastructure, utility and building assets and systems. He is also a member of the Health Physics Society, the Society of Nuclear Medicine. He has more than 225 publications in the open literature, most in the area of internal dosimetry for nuclear medicine applications, including complete textbooks on health physics and internal dose assessment.

The science of health physics, i.e radiation protection, was born as we discovered radiation and radioactivity and began experimenting with the associated phenomena. In the zeal of the initial investigations, however, some side effects were observed, and scientists quickly rallied to develop standards for protection of medical personnel, patients and others.

U.S. standards are based on the quantity ‘dose,’ which is energy absorbed in the body per unit mass. ‘Dose’ is a useful quantity in some, but not all, situations. It may be that energy, not energy per unit mass, is of consequence, but our understanding at present is incomplete. Altering our current system of radiation protection paradigm to incorporate these two issues is challenging. Spend the evening with Stabin to learn more.
