Nuclear Science Center receives DOE grant

The U.S. Department of Energy awarded Washington State University  more than $100,000 to enhance its research nuclear reactor. The funding  will support the purchase of new backup reactor power detectors as well  as the fabrication of their housings. It is part of a series of  improvements underway at WSU’s Nuclear Science Center including a new coating for the reactor pool.

WSU’s Dodgen Research Facility on the Pullman campus is home to a  1 megawatt TRIGA Reactor, which stands for Training, Research, Isotopes,  General Atomic. The Nuclear Science Center aims to advance fundamental  and applied nuclear science research and education at WSU. The center  and its reactor represent a unique resource for university researchers.

The Department of Energy recently announced the grant as part of a  package of awards for 74 nuclear research projects across the country.
